Bethel Burying Ground Memorial

presented by Karyn Olivier

Artist Karyn Olivier will discuss her recent commission that will commemorate the rediscovery of Bethel Burying Ground. At least five thousand African Americans were buried there, in the early 1800s, when Black people were denied dignified graves. She will also discuss her memorial design for Stenton House, honoring Dinah, a former enslaved woman who saved an historic mansion from burning by the British in the Revolutionary War. Olivier will also examine the controversy surrounding a racist mural at the University of Kentucky that she was commissioned to “counter”.

Karyn Olivier is a Philadelphia-based artist who creates sculptures, installations and public art. Her work often intersects and collapses multiple histories and memories with present-day narratives. Olivier is currently a professor of sculpture at Tyler School of Art and Architecture, Temple University.
