The Nouveau Riche Who Built North Philly, And The North Philly of Today

presented by Judith Robinson

North Philadelphia, once agricultural lands outside of William Penn’s Philadelphia, became home to summer mansions as wealthy residents escaped the hot, dense, city life. As Philadelphia grew to become an industrial giant in the Gilded Age, business owners amassed vast fortunes and expanded north along Broad Street with new institutions, banks, businesses, and speculative housing. Following the Great Depression, industries declined, and residents moved away from North Philadelphia as an influx of African Americans moved into the neighborhood. Join us for this rollercoaster ride through the ups and downs of North Philadelphia’s development as we look at its past, present, and future.
