**Special Tour** WAYNE JUNCTION

Wayne Junction, centered around the Wayne Junction Station that overlaps lower Germantown and upper Nicetown, was once a bustling region of Philadelphia’s industrial legacy. The Wayne Junction train station allowed for easy transportation of importing raw goods and the export of specialized manufactured goods which would be developed and produced for nearly a century from the late 1800’s to the mid 1900’s. Easily distinguished by its deep red brick facades, these one to three story industrial buildings produced a wealth of specialized items including push pins and tacks from the Moore Push-Pin factory, wood ball bearings from the Arguto Oilless Bearing Company, metal engravings from the Max Levy Company, and much more. Ever adapting, these buildings have been expanded, replaced, and have gone through many transformations to suit the needs of the changing industries over the years.

In the later decades of the 1900s, this area experienced a shift where many of the industrial tenants moved to more urban neighborhoods, leaving many of the buildings a husk of its former glory. While many of these industrial buildings remain, they have remained unused and neglected for a number of years, leaving dense residential housing in the area. A revitalization plan is now being implemented by local developer Ken Weinstein. He hopes to transform the former manufacturing buildings into mixed-use space for new residential and commercial growth, bringing new energy into this area. A few of his projects in Phase One of his plans have been the transformation of the Blaisdell Pencil Factory into a mixed use space now housing offices and a new restaurant, and the Charles Schaeffer School which is now converted to much needed office space.

Join real estate developer, Ken Weinstein, on a tour of the historic Wayne Junction area to learn more about the history of the area, experience Philadelphia’s industrial age, and see the potential in Wayne Junction’s future.

Meet at the parking lot of 137 Berkley Street, Philadelphia, PA 19144 (map).
