Julian Abele, Architect and the Beaux Arts

presented by Dreck Wilson, ASLA, NOMA

Julian Francis Abele (1881-1950) was a graduate of the three earliest institutions in Philadelphia teaching architecture: Philadelphia Museum and School of Industrial Art, University of Pennsylvania School of Architecture and the Pennsylvania Academy of the Fine Arts. His training rendered him among the most formally educated architects in America. From 1907-50, Abele functioned as senior designer for the office of architect Horace Trumbauer, responsible for thirteen cut stone buildings in Penn's "green country towne" including the Union League Club Annex (1908), Free Library of Philadelphia (1917) and Benjamin Franklin Hotel (1922). All are listed on the National Register of Historic Places as well as the Philadelphia Register of Historic Places.

Dreck Wilson is the President of the Landscape Consortium, Ltd. in Washington, DC. He is also the author of Julian Abele, Architect and the Beaux Arts and was a contributing author in other works such as “Architects Julian Abele and Paul Williams” and "David Williston, The First Black Landscape Architect."
