The Architecture of Science: William Wagner, John McArthur and the Wagner Free Institute of Science

presented by Susan Glassman

When it opened in 1865, the Wagner Free Institute of Science was Philadelphia’s newest building dedicated to science.  Its ambitious architectural program featured an innovative roof system, a lecture hall modeled on the newly opened Smithsonian Institution, and a soaring three-story exhibition space. In square footage, it was among the largest science institutions in the country. This talk will trace the origins of the Wagner’s architecture and programs in the context of Philadelphia as the center of science research and education in 19th century America.

Susan Glassman is the Executive Director of the Wagner Free Institute of Science in Philadelphia.  She currently serves on the board of the Consortium for History of Science, Technology and Medicine (CHSTM) and the Advisory Board of the Penn Museum.  She prepared the National Historic Landmark nominations for the Wagner Free Institute of the Science and the College of Physicians of Philadelphia.
